I had a friend that brought over 4 of the powered versions of those 35 years ago. With my stereo running their amps; turntable, preamp, equalizer, we could never get them to sound as good as my pair of A7-500's even though there were four of them, and we tried for a long time adjusting the EQ.

They appear to have silver dust caps. Is that correct for that model?

Yes the woofers should have aluminum dust caps. http://altecpro.com/pdfs/vintage/Spe...r%20System.pdf

423-8Z in an infinite baffle(sealed) enclosure, what do we have here?

This isn't your typical bass reflex Altec box.

Wonder how the woofer is unique from others?

Prolly never know unless somebody really old pops up. The most obvious is cosmetics. If I had to hazard a guess maybe a slightly heavier coil for the sealed box? But maybe not even that. Soon after repair kits became "one size fits all".
